THE ART GALLERY
THE HORROR & MACABRE SERIES
The beginnings of this series were marked by my submission to a magazine for it’s October 2014 issue, planned in time for Hallowe’en. My piece weren’t accepted, but it has inspired me to continue in this direction! I hope to explore not just Horror and Macabre imagery, but my personal feeling about events in my life by utilizing this imagery.
THE THEATRE SERIES
Theatre.
After more than 20 years, it’s still a word that fires my imagination. The audience sees the stories performed onstage, but rarely sees the stories which play out behind the curtains. Or above the stage. Or in the dark recesses of the space, where the memories of shows past remain, in names scrawled on old pieces of scenery, the tags of costumes and in tattered scripts left in the control booth. It’s a Twilight Zone of sorts back there, a place caught between places, between where the audience dreams and the troupers play. It is fuelled by vivid imagination, but driven by unrelenting reality. It’s hard work creating the fantastical. There’s never enough time, hardly enough money and more often than not, low-tech solutions will win the day.
Take a wander, now, past the sign that says, “No Audience Beyond This Point.” See what the theatre folk see. Glimpse what the theatre itself remembers. And I like to believe that it does remember the actors, dancers and crew who worked there and the shows they mounted. Is the theatre haunted? Maybe. Is Shakespeare’s Scottish Play really cursed? Well, there was this one time when…

In August of 2013, Toronto hosted Buskerfest, wherein street performers from around the world converged on the city. An exciting and interactive form of theatre, buskering is a side of the craft I had not explored much until that weekend.
Coppelia – The Living Doll
The incredibly talented Kate Mior is a Toronto-based performer. Her character “Coppelia” was charming and funny without saying a word. She communicated so much through mime, with only gestures and looks, keeping the crowd riveted to her every movement. She was the perfect subject to paint. (www.katemior.com)
The Dragon Master
As I wandered through Buskerfest, I found myself at my alma mater, Ryerson U, and there I saw them: three great Sauruses, towering over everyone, roaring and pecking at the awestruck by-standers. These giant puppets, controlled by a performer within each, walked through the crowd. It was a dazzling sight. (www.closeact.nl)
———————————-
From January to March, 2013, my alma mater, the Theatre School at Ryerson University, allowed me to attend rehearsals for their productions of The Piper (by Colleen Murphy, directed by Stewart Arnott) and Choregraphic Works (produced by Kenny Pearl), with the intention of creating original pieces of art based on the process the Theatre School employs to mount their shows. Having gone through the Theatre Tech undergrad degree program there myself, I was already familiar with the RTS’s workings, which made it a great experience all around!
The following pieces are from that collaboration.

SYMPHONY OF NINE – The Art of THE GALLERY
Symphony Of Nine.
Great friends and great musicians, these guys are. The idea began with me thinking it would be nice to have a piece of my artwork in an album sleeve. The band had begun working on their third album and the timing seemed perfect. I created “Stage Door (Tonight)” and presented it to them. The response was more than I could have expected.
“I’m inspired by this,” said Scott, “How would you feel about doing, like, a piece for each song?”
They were still writing and recording and I didn’t know where this would take me. I’d be committing to 10 or 12 pieces, maybe more. My reply was honest, “Okay, let’s give it a try and see what happens!”
Over the course of the months that followed, each new piece was met with enthusiasm and that fuelled this process. We made a conscious decision not to be too literal with the pieces, wherein I might paint exactly what the song described. Instead, at my insistence, I was only given limited information, such as the title and the style, maybe a few lyrics. This allowed me to not be focused on a specific meaning, but instead to paint the imagery invoked by the limited information. I felt it would fire the imagination of the listener, flipping through the CD booklet later, allowing them to draw their own connections as well as those threaded through on purpose.
And there are connections, both between the pieces and songs and between the different pieces themselves. Look closely. Don’t be afraid to go back and see whether details sneak through more than one piece. Some may be obvious. Others will take some deeper reflection…
